  1. unless

But ranges from the faintest contrast to absolute negation; as, I am willing to go, but (on the other hand) content to stay; he is not an honest man, but (on the contrary) a villain. The contrast may be with a silent thought; as, but let us go (it being understood that we might stay longer). In restrictive use, except and excepting are slightly more emphatic than but; we say, no injury but a scratch; or, no injury except some painful bruises. Such expressions as «words are but breath» (nothing but) may be referred to the restrictive use by ellipsis. So may the use of but in the sense of unless; as, «it never rains but it pours.» To the same head must be referred the conditional use; as, «you may go, but with your father’s consent» (i. e., «provided you have,» «except that you must have,» etc.). «Doubt but» is now less used than the more logical «doubt thatBut never becomes a full synonym for and; and adds something like, but adds something different; «brave and tender» implies that tenderness is natural to the brave; «brave but tender» implies that bravery and tenderness are rarely combined.

a) until и unless
b) as long as и as soon as
c) if и whether

Например, «I want to give up smoking» — «Я хочу бросить курить». Например, понимаем, что «бросить» в смысле «перестать что-то делать» будет give up (а не throw, как в другом контексте), что после give up нужно говорить smoking (а не to smoke), и т.д.

Например, «молодой человек — young man», а «молодой картофель — new potatoes».

А вот для соединительных слов — вроде until, unless, as long as, as soon as, и их многочисленных собратьев — уже другая стратегия.

Go straight on until you see a yellow shop. —
Bobby always plays football until it gets dark. —

The children are going to eat all the butter unless you take it away from them now.
Milly always screams when she sees an insect — unless it’s a ladybird. —

***

As soon as запомнить легко.

Little Mickey stops smoking as soon as he sees his father. —
Honey, I will come to you as soon as I get my visa. —

А вот as long as — это синоним слова «если» (if). Но в любом случае, as long as значит “если” И говорит об условии.

I will clean your fish tank as long as you pay me $50 an hour. —

I don’t know if I will go fishing next weekend. —
The officer is asking if you speak Spanish. —

I don’t know whether I will go fishing next weekend. —
The officer is asking whether you speak Spanish. —

as soon as — как только
as long as — если
if — ли
whether — ли

Вставьте в пропуски: as soon as, as long as, until, unless, if.
