Advanced (Collocations).
Список самых распространенных синонимов, без которых не обойдется ни одно хорошее эссе на английском языке.
buy, purchase (глаголы)
Например, слова smart and wise.

Например: to allow — to permit (разрешать); steward — flight attendant (бортпроводник); screenwriter — scenarist (сценарист)
Можно сказать put somebody in prison/put somebody in jail («посадить кого-либо в тюрьму») или jail bird (заключенный – жаргонное). Но вот использовать prison bird уже не получится, поскольку этот синоним в данном контексте не употребляется носителями.
Таких слов достаточно много и у начинающих изучать язык, порой, вызывают затруднения.
4. Эмоционально неидентичные синонимы – слова акцентирующие внимание не на самом предмете или явлении, которое обозначают, а на эмоциональном отношении к нему.
Например: soldier (солдат – нейтральное), serviceman (военнослужащий – официальное), warrior (воин – торжественное)
bad (плохой – нейтральное), lousy (паршивый – грубое), outrageous (возмутительный – формальное)
- pass away («уйти»);
- take the ferry («сесть на паром»);
- kick the bucket («пнуть ведро»);
